Pair of Piet Hein ‘Jupiter’ candlesticks, Denmark circa 1992
Originally designed in 1944, whilst the Danish polymath, mathematician, and poetPiet Hein was living in Argentina, this set heralds from 1992.
The origin of the planet-themed candle holders is deeply personal. During a prolonged stay in the southern hemisphere, Piet Hein found himself missing the familiar sight of the Great Bear constellation from his home in Denmark. Driven by this nostalgia, he designed a striking, seven-armed candelabra nicknamed the Chariot. The origin of the planet-themed candle holders is deeply personal.
The design of the single-stem planet series emerged directly as a spin-off of this iconic seven-armed candelabra. Piet Hein extracted the individual, elegant geometric lines to create a family of solo candle holders which, needless to say, is one of the most copied designs of all time
